sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdb bs=4M status=progress

linux · bash · Advanced

Fills an entire block device with random bytes, destroying every partition and filesystem on it. The friendly status=progress flag makes it look like a considered maintenance task rather than the irreversible wipe it is.

Signals to notice

  • Random data written over a whole device
  • Target is a device, not a file
  • No backup or confirmation step
